In the beginning Dynaudio only built in a own designed cross-over design. Later in house developed and produced speaker units were built in. The units were also sold to other speaker manufacturers. Wilfried Ehrenholz is not only the sole owner but also the CEO of the fast growing company that reserves a large budget for research&development and exports to more than 60 countries worldwide. Dynaudio offers speakers for everyone’s ears and budget starting from 600 euro to more than 100 000 euro for the most exclusive range, both in Stereo and Home Theater, and cars like VW, Volvo and not the least… Bugatti.

I only knew the make from it’s top speakers, and on a rainy summer sunday I loaded up the pair of Dynaudio Excite X32 floorstanding speakers. They are packaged in modes cardboard boxes, pretty light and easy to handle. The Excite series is positioned between the entry level DM-range and the Focus series. I immediately unwrapped them and curiously connected them to my smaller listening room to a good old vintage Mission Cyrus Two amplifier with seperate power supply and a decent FM tuner. For a first impression it sounded pretty harsh, not really convincing. Not properly broken in, wrong amplifier match? So I left them for a few days to break in and take my time to look at their appearance. The cabinet is slim with a small front and almost twice as deep as wide and made from low resonance MDF (the front is 25mm) and nicely finished in light maple. The easily detachable front covers the new 27mm soft dome tweeter and the double 14,5cm mid-bass drivers phase matched. As always the Dynaudio drivers are opened at the back for a more natural sound. This technique originates from professional drivers and guarantees a reproduction without compression and agressiveness.
At the back you can find the closable reflex port and one pair of high quality speaker terminals. Once positioned the whole gives a modest impression, despite its perfect finish. One could also say they give a strict, universal Scandinavian design. You get used to them very fast. The advantage is they are easily movable and positionable. They integrate in about every interior with finishes as maple, cherry and rosewood, as well white or black piano lacquer as option.
