The trend to make the speakers in your home smaller and smaller is going on for years now. In the average living room you will find the 5.1 systems discretely concealed in the corners of the room. I am talking about home cinema sets consisting of 5 small satellite speakers and 1 robust subwoofer. A disadvantage of such a system is that the satellite speakers, due to their limited size, often fail to supplement the bass of the (large) subwoofer with enough high tones and mid tones. However, Teufel claims that their Cubycon 2 is a set that is not only compact but also has a high-level sound quality, and the boys from Berlin might be right about this.
Teufel
In 1979, Peter Tschimmel, a young Berliner, opened a store with parts for those who want to build their own speakers. 33 years later, Teufel Audio is a respected audio brand known by many and number 1 in European online speaker sales. They produce good speakers, that is for sure, but if they impress as much with this fairly compact system can be read below.
Out of the box
The package consist as usual of a manual, five speakers and a bass box. Suitable cables are not included, but they can be ordered with Teufel in various lengths and qualities. With a size of 9.5 x 9.5 x 19cm and a weight of 1.2kg, the satellite speakers are not as small and light as some of their competitors, but you can still easily place them next to the TV, resting on the included stands. That this is not a standard Samsung or LG speaker set, becomes immediately clear when you notice the quality of the used materials and connections. The casing of the satellite speakers is entirely made of aluminium and it all feels very robust. All five can be hung horizontally or vertically on the wall with nails. The front of the speakers is protected by a grill covered with black fabric with the Teufel-logo at the bottom. At the back there are two connections for RCA-cables combined with a screw head. That way you can also use your old cables, very convenient.
The casing carries two 80mm midrange drivers of which one is combined with a 20mm tweeter coaxially. These satellites each deliver 100 Watt RMS and up to 140 Watt peak capacity. This is a lot, but definitely not a measure for the quality of the sound. More about this later. To make the subwoofer as compact as possible the designers at Teufel chose to place three 13cm woofers on top of each other and drive it with a 150 Watt Class D amplifier. The plastic bass box rests on four stands and only takes up 50 x 21 x 50cm of space. The front side is also covered with black fabric and at the back you will find the Line In, a volume button, an on/off switch with control light and a fine tuning button for setting the sensitivity of the auto power on-function that automatically wakes the sub from its stand-by modus.
