Blasting music
After giving your speakers their own place and the cables are ok, you can start listening. And whether you like jazz, pop, classic or R&B, the fact that this set is ‘bass heavy’ is what strikes one most. The volume of the subwoofer can of course be adjusted the way you like to. The volume scale of the bass does not go from 1 to 5 to 10, but from subtle to substantial to ‘boom-boom-Johnny-car’-overkill. This shows the potential that this bass box has. If you know that Teufel does this with 3 high quality woofers the size of the door speakers in a Renault Twingo then you cannot do anything else but conclude that this is one impressive sub. The frequency range of the cross-over cannot be adapted, but with a well balanced set such as this Cubycon 2 that isn’t necessary.
The small speakers also deliver an impressive performance. Just like their design, the sound is also very neutral. High tones are reproduced very well and you’ll never have the feeling they sound shrill, not even at high volumes. That is because the Teufel boys gave their small speakers enough punch to handle these high volumes and therefore they did not have to look for a volume boost in the high tones. When you approach the limits of your speakers, in the end it will be the strings in your classical music, the vocals in your pop music or the synths in your dub step that will distort.
Thanks to the aluminium casing resonances are suppressed very well and you can really “aim” the sound towards you by placing the speakers correctly. Important, since you are buying a 5.1 set to enjoy the pleasure of surround sound and not just to fill your room with sound. Which incidentally is no problem for the Cubycon 2. Teufel indicates that the set is suitable for rooms up to 35m² and this is not exaggerated. Bass heads can make their entire house shake and listening to music will turn into “blasting music”! When you don’t want to cable the back speakers, then you can buy the wireless version which is identical for only 200 Euros more.
The subwoofer can easily be placed beside, under or in a TV cabinet while the satellites barely take up extra space. This home cinema-set is definitely convenient. The only “disadvantage” is that the set does not have built-in electronics to prevent distortion and it is therefore important to choose a good amp. For the amount of 1300 Euros there are plenty of micro size home cinema-sets from competitors such as KEF, Orb Audio or Bose, but none of those exceeds the combination of a well balanced sound with the punch that the Cubycon 2 delivers.
Conclusion
When small speakers are your thing, than did Teufel bring a very robust set into the market for you. About the neutral design you can discuss all you want, but this is of course always a matter of taste. Let us therefore focus on the one thing a 5.1 set has to deliver and what is really important. Home cinema sound. And that is where the Cubycon 2 set delivers a hell of a performance for its size. With its clear voice reproduction, dynamic basses, renewed technologies and stunning compactness it is easy to integrate in every interior. In short, for someone who wants to downsize but does want a cinema large sound this would be a great choice and that is why this Teufel 5.1 set is given the “do buy” tip !
