Listening and image test
To extensively test the capabilities of both amplifiers we worked with the audio Blu-ray ‘The Spirit of Turtle’, and the film “Transformers: Age of Extinction” (Blu-ray), a number of high resolution files on USB connection (purchased from Linn Fisher Mahler) and we played some music via Bluetooth from a smartphone and tablet. The test was conducted in the Advantage Room which is equipped with a complete 7.1 speaker set Canton Reference Jubilee.
Onkyo TX-NR535 5.1 setup
Audio Blu-ray “The Spirit of Turtle – The steady, soothing sound strikes us in this price category. Impressive how such an affordable amplifier can output this in soundstage. It is important to connect quality speakers, even then the intrinsic value of the TX-NR535 really shines. The sound is clean, powerful, sober and correct. With the Blu-ray “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ‘the spaciousness and stability emerges, quiet unique at this price range. If we play the Hi-res FLAC and WAV files with a USB key, there is a marked difference listening via HDMI vs Bluetooth. Not exactly my favorite way to listen to music, the difference is quite large. The sound is missing stability and tranquility in both approaches. We think it is quite normal that the HDMI connection scores very good and through other channels such as USB and Bluetooth, you have a lesser result. The best and most beautiful results we achieved via HDMI and I would always use it (my favorite). The Onkyo AccuEQ Room Correction provides a clear added value and is rarely offered at this price range.
Onkyo TX-NR636 7.1 in preparation
When reviewing the Onkyo TX-NR636 we went through the same process as with the Onkyo TX-NR535. Blu-ray audio sounds more refined and subtle. The sound is more open and pulled sounds are stable. In this arrangement, it is more powerful and the power 7.1 arrangement clearly has an added value. Even when playing the Transformers Blu-ray images looks as if it is sharper and smoother. The image in the Onkyo TX-NR636 is upscaled by the Qdeo processor to a 4K signal. That’s mighty clearly on the Panasonic 50AX800 4K TV. The dynamics and power of the 7.1 setup really add to the cinema effect. The USB connection TX-NR636 is clearly better than with the TX-NR535. The more qualitative power amplification, parts and room correction also play their roles convincingly. Also streaming over LAN and Bluetooth is at a higher level than with the Onkyo TX-NR535. Finally we get our Thorens TD 160 turntable out of the closet to hear Miles Davis play through the Onkyo. Too bad you do not have a MM / MC selector to choose the right element and output voltage so we have to use a separate preamplifier.
Onkyo Remote App
We have a particular interest for the Onkyo App (Android / iOS smartphone / tablet) that you can download. After downloading the app connect your amplifier to the common network (wired or wireless) or to a tablet or smartphone to operate your amplifier. The simplicity and speed with which the app is setup, recognizing the Onkyo devicesis excellent. Furthermore, the app is clear and easy to use. This is a very convenient way to control your amp, especially since you do not need direct visible connection between your remote control (the app) and your device. If you use several Onkyo products with networking these all appear in the list and you can select the one you want to operate. Also, you can play music from your smartphone or tablet using the app on the amplifier. The user-friendly and nice design, in addition to the great development of the app is a clear argument to purchase the Onkyo amplifier. In short, the Onkyo Remote App combines neat utility with value and easy installation.
