Steinway-Lyngdorf
Steinway doesn’t need an introduction. Or does it? Music instruments for dummies, it is! Steinway & Sons is a (grand) piano maker, located in New York and Hamburg, Germany. Steinway grand pianos are amongst the most famous in the world. The company was started in 1839 in the German town of Seesen, by Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg. He migrated with his sons in 1851 to the United States and changed his surname to Steinway. In the 1860s they became the leading piano builders. Steinways are known for their powerful tone, that also has some kind of smoothness in it. Through this, they distinguish themselves from other piano builders. Steinway grand pianos are often used by famous pianists. Everyone who goes to a classic concert now and then has probably seen and heard the beautiful D model, the biggest grand piano. This very piano has played a key part in the existence of Steinway-Lyngdorf. High-end for dummies, now. Loads of audio companies have dreamt of cooperating with Steinway. Most of them had to be satisfied with their dreams. That is, until Peter Lyngdorf was asked whether he could develop a system that could recreate a Steinway model D as lifelike as possible. Peter Lyngdorf accepted that challenge. During a product presentation no one was able to discern the difference between the life performances of the pianists and the representation of the model D. There is a reason the model D system carries the name ‘the art of perfection’. Steinway-Lyngdorf was born.
Model D and family
Model D means a majestic and stately dipolar sound box (dipolar radiates both through the front and back the tonal image into space). It’s a three way system that is just short of 206 cm. (6ft 9in). A staggering amount of 4×12″ woofers deliver a powerful and convincing low. The mids are being taken care of 2×5¼” units, and the highs are delivered through an AMT (air motion transformer). What did you think of frequency range of 20Hz to 22kHz and a maximum sound pressure of 117dB? Model D has, for every speaker, two built-in amplifiers (2×400 Watt / 2×800 Watt). To control this all you partner them with a Head Unit and Remote Control. Those Remote Controls are a true piece of art. You can have a custom finish of 24 carat gold, or chrome. The price tag, you ask? More than 150.000 EUR. That is indeed a huge amount of money, but in return you might just have the very best system in the world at home. Steinway-Lyngdorf for dummies. A line-up of the complete range: Model D sound system, Model C sound system, Model M sound system, Model LS sound system (built-in). Have a look on the Steinway-Lyngdorf website to discover the differences between each and every model. The new-born in the Steinway-Lyngdorf family answers to the S Series sound system.
